ASSESSING TURKEY’S CHANGING INTERNATIONAL STATUS: A SOCIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS PERSPECTIVE

The last decade, under the leadership of Ahmet Davutoğlu, as first the advisor, second the Minister of Foreign Affairs and finally as the prime minister; is characterized for seeking a new role in the changing world order for Turkey: being one of the regional powers. This enthusiasm is visible on increased foreign policy activism, military investments and trade volume especially with its surrounding regions. Meanwhile, Turkey’s ambitions also include a soft power dimension, operationalized as a combination of culture, political values and foreign policy. The governments’ investment on diplomatic connections is one of the indicators of this quest for power, materialized on increased number of diplomatic missions abroad. This short paper aims to bring a new interpretation from a Social Network Analysis perspective and to measure the status of Turkey by using tools provided by this new paradigm.
